The Mining Industry once dominated Montana's economy. Today mining is producing less than 10% of Montana's revenues and towns like Anaconda, where a bustling mining economy once flourished, now rely on tourism as an industry. The Anaconda Smelter Stack was built in 1919 and shut down 1981. It was designed to discharge exhaust gases from the various roasting and smelting furnaces at the smelter owned by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Today, the Anaconda Smelter Stack is a state park.
